The Graduate Artist Residency at Tyneside Cinema is an opportunity for recent graduates from Northumbria University to realise a new moving image work over a three-month period, supported by curatorial, technical and academic staff at both institutions. Following the format of Artists in the Cinema, which like the Graduate Artist film are screened before mainstream features, the residency is a unique challenge for artists to respond to the context of the cinema.

The Graduate Artist Residency is delivered in partnership with Northumbria University and is supported by The NewBridge Project.

‘The Graduate Artist Residency was amazing, eye opening and the best thing I could have done after graduating. You can easily become lost after graduating, and doing this kept me going at a good pace: it gave me the time, space and support to create a brief and then structure to keep it working. Instead of feeling I had come to a full stop, it gave me the experience of working in a professional cinema environment.

It is not like working in a normal studio. I found out how different things work: it is a different crowd and a different way of looking at film and cinema. It was great having new perspectives, to be able to view the footage professionally and artistically with support for where it is shown and how things would look in a cinema, whilst keeping the ideals of the artist. This helped me understand, objectively, who I am, as an emerging artist who works with film.’
